The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Green University of Bangladesh (GUB), in collaboration with the IEEE GUB Student Branch, successfully organized a hands-on workshop titled “From Theory to Practice: Building, Configuring & Connecting a Real-World Network” on 17 August 2026 at A-302 (Seminar Hall). The workshop was conducted as part of the CSE 317 – Computer Networking Lab course and focused on providing students with practical exposure to real-world networking technologies and professional networking equipment.
The workshop was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation by allowing students to work with physical routers and switches in an actual networking environment. Through hands-on demonstrations and interactive sessions, participants gained a practical understanding of how computer networks are designed, configured, connected, and troubleshot.
A major focus of the workshop was the design and physical implementation of a network using routers and switches. Students were introduced to the process of establishing physical network connections and configuring networking devices according to a given network topology. The session also provided practical demonstrations of router and switch configuration, enabling students to relate concepts learned in the classroom to their real-world applications.
The workshop also covered the implementation and troubleshooting of static routing, followed by an introduction to dynamic routing and its practical configuration. Students observed how routing decisions are made and how different network devices communicate with one another to facilitate end-to-end connectivity. The hands-on activities further helped participants understand common configuration issues and the importance of systematic troubleshooting in maintaining network connectivity.
The interactive nature of the workshop encouraged students to actively participate, ask questions, and explore the behavior of networking devices during configuration and troubleshooting. Working with physical hardware provided an opportunity to develop practical skills that are difficult to acquire through simulation or theoretical instruction alone.
The workshop successfully demonstrated the importance of combining theoretical understanding with hands-on experience in computer networking education. It strengthened students’ practical knowledge of network configuration, routing, connectivity, and troubleshooting while providing valuable exposure to professional networking equipment.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, GUB, and the IEEE GUB Student Branch remain committed to providing students with opportunities for experiential learning and industry-oriented skill development. Such initiatives are expected to further enhance students’ technical competencies and prepare them for the practical challenges of modern networking and information technology.
